What do others say about GradIEMA membership?

Testimonial Background

I was a student member of IEMA whilst pursuing my masters. I enjoyed being in a community of like-minded professionals, simultaneously learning a lot from everyone I met. Webinars and events by IEMA helped me to gain professional skills as well as network with people working in this area. Knowing What's happening in the world with respect to environment and sustainability helped me immensely with job applications and interviews. I used my knowledge to constructively criticise organisations and help them understand what could be done better. Doing that helped me land with 5 job offers after graduation. I am thankful to IEMA for helping me kick start my career in Environment and sustainability. Happy to volunteer for a few events and have a video/blogging testimonials if required?

Phani Ratnala, Sustainability advisor

I used to plant trees every year during heavy rain season, but I never knew that this is a global requirement under IEMA to promote sustainability. This course has helped me to widen my perspective on environment. Now I know that the little change I make to mitigate climate change it's for the present and future generations. IEMA have made me change from ordinary person in environmental conservation to professional one. Now going forward by the knowledge of IEMA I want to start planting more trees and mostly fruit trees, so as to feed the world with vitamins. Lastly but not the least, I want to start sharing my knowledge to other people as I encourage them to join IEMA. Thank you.

Harun Maina Wachira, Civil worker

Becoming an IEMA member has helped to support me during the first year of my career in the industry through valuable resources, news and support.

Hannah Cleary, Environmental and Sustainability Advisor

While I'm early in my career, IEMA has given me some great opportunities to develop my knowledge of sustainability topics, and my network. Sustainability runs through social value across all dimensions, and I'm grateful for the access that being a member has given me to some great resources, events, and experts to learn from, through IEMA Futures, and the Regional Networks, where I have been given the opportunity to become a Steering Group Committee Member for my local network. Having IEMA membership gives me confidence when talking on sustainability topics, and I would definitely recommend membership to IEMA to any students, recent graduates or anyone else early in their sustainability career.

  • Application overview

There are two steps to applying

    Step 1

Certified Course – Complete the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management course via an IEMA approved training partner. After the course you must complete three knowledge-based assignments which is administered and marked via the training partner delivering the course.

    or

    or

Within the assessment of competence, you will be required to submit written evidence of up to four case studies demonstrating how you apply your environment and sustainability knowledge and skills in the workplace, to the level required in the Practitioner standard. Each of your case studies will need to be verified by a witness, which could be a manager, colleague or client.

What do others say about Practitioner membership?

Testimonial Background

As an IEMA Practitioner and Registered Environmental Practitioner member, I can attest to the profound impact that IEMA has had on my journey. Through their comprehensive courses and supportive community, IEMA equips professionals like me with the knowledge and skills needed to drive meaningful change. From sustainable business practices to legislative insights, IEMA provides the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of environmental management with confidence. Joining IEMA has not only elevated my expertise but also connected me with a network of like-minded individuals dedicated to creating a sustainable future. If you're passionate about environmental stewardship, IEMA is the catalyst you've been searching for. Join me in shaping a brighter tomorrow with IEMA.

Mukhtar Mian, Environmental Manager

I joined IEMA in May 2021 as an affiliate member. As a founding committee member of the Chartered Quality Institute's (CQI) sustainability special interest group established the same year to promote sustainability within the quality profession in practical terms through the provision of a forum where quality professionals network, exchange best practices and ideas, and share material on sustainability issues, I needed to join a globally respected professional body on environmental management and sustainability to enhance my knowledge and skills. Although based in Nigeria, joining IEMA provided me access to CPD opportunities, which enabled me to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, legislation, and best practices in environmental management, which I in turn used to provide valuable insights to other quality professionals. In 2023, in order to progress my membership in IEMA, I completed the IEMA certificate in environmental management (CEM) qualification, which further improved my ability to implement effective environmental management and sustainability initiatives for my clients. In February 2024, I achieved recognized professional status with IEMA by becoming a practitioner member of the institute. This professional recognition has enhanced my credibility, leading to new opportunities. This professional recognition has further reassured my clients of my commitment to professionalism and ethical practices. IEMA provides a wealth of resources, including guidance documents, case studies, and research reports, which are invaluable for me as a management systems consultant seeking to implement best practices in environmental management, and I'm happy to be a part of a global network that provides ample opportunities to connect with other professionals in the field, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration on projects or initiatives.

Adare Oluwafemi PIEMA, Management Systems and Sustainability Implementation Consultant

As a sustainability officer at a multi academy trust, I have found IEMA CPD and resources invaluable. As a sector to which sustainability is a relatively new area of focus, there is little sector specific guidance and CPD. The quality of the content provided by IEMA and the certified training courses means that I now have the skills and knowledge to apply to my sector and context.

Julie Rowlandson, Sustainability Officer

I joined IEMA 2 years ago and I am happy I made that decision. I have obtained so much value from the resources provided on the platform; one that stood out for me was "Organizational capability: Driving sustainability skills in your organization". This resource informed me on strategies for ensuring sustainability is influenced across my own organization. This was worth remembering for me as we live in times when professionals still struggle with understanding the components of sustainability, much more transitioning. I have better understanding on sustainability thanks to IEMA resources, webinars and my own self developmental efforts. This has differentiated me from other sustainability professionals in the Nigerian industry. I have referred and coached several colleagues in my network to subscribe to the IEMA CEM certificate to enhance their sustainability skills. The Practitioner membership status (PIEMA) has accorded me some sort of recognition as I get selected for interviews with recruiters for sustainability roles. Hopefully I should become chartered soon.

Priscilia Obot Young, Sustainability Manager

I am having backgrounds in M.Sc. Environmental and Earth Resources Management and a B.Sc. in Natural Resources Management. I am currently with Azumah Resources Ghana Limited as Environmental Officer. As part of my responsibilities in my company, I do routine inspections and periodic internal auditing. Saeed Anwar, Senior Environmental & Sustainability Engineer

As an academic of 30 years, I'm used to reading, studying and working to deadlines. However, these days I am much more comfortable setting exams than sitting them. And although I have published on many aspects of sustainable development, I haven't had much contact with the coalface of business strategy, product development, marketing and compliance. Taking the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management with Dave Evans at Act Sustainably, I have rediscovered the excitement of being a student, learning new skills and striking out in a new direction. Working alongside tri-sector professionals, the IEMA pathway has opened up a new world of consultancy and collaboration in which I will be able to start contributing to real change on the ground within institutions (not least my own university) and companies. Opening up new areas of work, I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of eventually becoming a MIEMA Chartered Environmentalist.

Stephen Quilley, Associate Professor Social and Ecological Innovation

As a member of IEMA, I have found tremendous value in the resources and support they provide. The access to a wide network of professionals and the opportunity to attend career events have been invaluable for my career growth. Additionally, the wellbeing support and mental health initiatives offered by IEMA have made a positive impact on my overall well-being. I highly recommend IEMA to anyone looking to excel in the field of environmental management and sustainability.

Prince Delali, Environmental Compliance Officer, Blue Skies

I am very happy to be an active member of IEMA for over a period of ten years now. It is a lifelong experience and has enabled me to understand all areas of life in diversified way. Furthermore, I have experienced top-class room for inclusion and diversity in all endeavours with the organisation. These has also enlarged my portfolio in career advancement globally and locally. I am encouraged and motivated on the journey with IEMA as it has become exceptional for worldwide learning and development. I would really encourage professionals to become members as soon as possible to join on the exciting journey.

Michael Ovia, Consultant

Having joined IEMA last year, I can already feel IEMA's impact towards shaping sustainability professional's career journey and developing the knowledge of the wider community. IEMA offers webinars, discussion forums and events (both online and in-person) relevant to different areas of sustainability, so I was able to select the ones that cater towards my sustainability career and interests. The most important aspect of IEMA that I value highly is its vast network of people - to tackle the largest problem humanity has faced in decades, working together with like-minded people will be key to success. Getting to know other sustainability practioners can only help grow my professional network and share insights to adapt to my own area of sustainability profession.

Clemens Yuen, Principal Sustainability Specialist

I have been a member of IEMA since I was a student completing my MSc in Environmental Management. During my time studying, I found the local networking events, webinars and monthly magazines. I naturally upgraded to Graduate level when I started working in the sector, and through continued professional development, I have moved from Associate to Practioner - now being a member for 10 years! Throughout my career, both working in-house and as an independent environmental consultant, being recognised as PIEMA gives confidence to the organisations that I work with. It is an easy way for me to demonstrate that I have the skills and knowledge necessary to do the work that is required. I have undertaken several IEMA qualifications over the years to improve my competency and stay updated with environmental and sustainability that are relevant to my work. I believe IEMA membership provides immense value for sustainability professionals in terms of networking, skills development and knowledge exchange.

The IEMA has a wide and diverse membership all of whom unite in their work with the environment. Frequent news updates via email are useful in highlighting changes in legislation and the webinars are not only topical but feature some of the leading talent in the industry. There are also so many opportunities to get involved, from local coffee mornings to lobbying government, and it really feels like a community. IEMA provides / discusses all contemporary information on the issues around the Globe in the field of Environment, Biodiversity, Sustainability etc. It provides equal opportunities to all the associated stakeholders to exhibit their views and invites participation. Its an excellent resource / encylopedia for entry level associates like me to enrich my knowledge and lead the professional life.

Chris Gale, Environmental Officer

Being part of IEMA has really been instrumental in my career journey. My understanding and knowledge of Environmental and Sustainability issues has been heightened through the application of lessons learnt during my course. IEMA is indeed an avalanche for Environmental and Sustainability development.

Christian Adjei Dompreh, Environment, Social & Permits Supervisor

I have spent over 30 years working in the waste recycling industry (specifically metal recycling). I was a safety professional for many years , but the company I work for wanted to combine both safety and environmental roles. I had a very good practical understanding of environmental and sustainability management at metal recycling sites, but had no formal qualifications and lacked the underpinning knowledge to fulfil this new role. I therefore completed the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management and became a Practitioner Member of IEMA (PIEMA). The qualification I undertook and the tuition I received to achieve it was truly inspirational. This experience was also shared by other delegates on the course I attended. I would go as far as to say that it has changed my outlook on sustainability. I apply what I have learned to both my work and personal life and have become a strong advocate.

Danny Swygart, Regional Safety, Health and Environmental Manager

When I joined IEMA in 2014, I'd just started out in the world of sustainability. My job then was dedicating 50% of my time to developing a corporate social responsibility policy for a chain of schools. I studied for my Certificate in Environmental Management in 2015, which enabled me to become a Practitioner member of IEMA in 2016. I now work in the public sector, delivering net zero for a government body that regulates more than £2 trillion of investments in the UK. IEMA has been pivotal in getting me to where I am - the various networks, regular communications, training opportunities and peer group all give a coherent foundation on which to build any career in sustainability and environmental management.

Daniel Woodard, Sustainability & Net Zero Advisor

Being a member of IEMA has helped my career in a number of ways so far. The access to knowledge and further CPD through various webinars and through TRANSFORM magazine has kept me in the loop with key changes in the environmental and sustainability sectors that apply to my role. IEMA is also a well-known and recognised badge to show prospective employers that you're committed to best practice in the environmental sector and the IEMA Code of Professional Conduct. The development pathway of moving from a Graduate member to a Practitioner member was clear and gave direction through the Sustainability Skills Map, and the opportunities to be consulted for policy changes at governmental level mean you can have a real input into policymakers' decisions. I've also been a member of my local IEMA Steering Group for the last 3 years and it's been great to get more involved in organising events for our local members, as well as a good opportunity to network with peers across the environmental sector.

Elisa Caton, Sustainability Manager

IEMA provides me with all the updates training and webinars that keeps my industry knowledge up to date, as well as giving learning opportunity in innovation or current topics. Also the ability to undertake the Practitioner exam has allowed me to have further recognition for my knowledge and particularly industry experience. The resources and support offered to progress is also really beneficial.

Georgia England, Environment and Sustainability Advisor

I came to environmental management fairly late in my career with my only science qualification being an o'level in biology. At the age of 50 I undertook a CIPS qualification which involved six exams so when I began looking at a professional qualification for environment (age 53), I swore that I didn't want to 'do exams' again. IEMA offered a fantastic opportunity to gain a professional qualification by using my practical experience and expertise rather than textbook. I undertook six modules, wrote six short dissertations and passed with no difficulty. Being able to use the PIEMA membership adds gravitas to how I am perceived in my industry and I have earned a lot of respect from being able to demonstrate professional membership alongside my experience. You don't need to be a young graduate to progress in this profession and IEMA recognises this.

Janice Johnson, Supply Chain & Sustainability Manager

IEMA's frequent insightful information on netzero, energy transition, sustainability, Circular econmony and green skills published via email publibcation and webnars have been very helpful in updating my knowlegde and understanding of the present environmental and sustainability issues and provides a focus for my objectives and goals, and influence as environmental and sustainability manager of my organisation. The interaction IEMA offers through regional online meetings allows interaction and peer-to-peer sharing of practitioner perspectives, which strenthens my confidence for executing environmental and sustainbility initiatives for my organisation. For example I'm able to define the strategies for Decarbonisation and zero-routine flare for my organisation's operation.

John Korle-Morgan, HSSE Manager

In 2015, while conducting online research, I fortuitously encountered the International Environmental Management Association (IEMA). Intrigued by its reputation and the vast repository of knowledge it promised, I was prompted to delve into the comprehensive tome, [John_Brady]_Environmental_Management_in_Organizations. With a background as a Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) professional, my forte had primarily been on the safety dimensions. However, upon undertaking a major pipeline construction initiative, I became acutely aware of the intricate environmental considerations intrinsic to such expansive projects.

Magsud Aghayev, HSE Team Lead

I am a construction manager, not a full time environmental manager. However sustainability and environmental matters affect all walks of life. When I build, I try to ensure that the built environment is as sustainable as possible. One of my most enjoyable construction projects was roadworks on the banks of the Nile in Uganda. Any pollution would have had a potential effect all the way to the Mediterranean. Applying my environmental training helped the project win words of praise from the Ugandan authorities.

Mark Livermore, Civil Works Superintendent

When I started out on my journey into environment and sustainability, which was probably later in life than most, there were two key things which I wanted / needed. Academic leaning in a relevant field and professional recognition. During my academic studies, I completed my IEMA Foundation and Certificate in Environmental Management. Despite still studying, my IEMA qualifications enabled me to take up a role in my company as Environmental Manager, subject to completing my under grad qualification. This was simply due to the reputation of IEMA. Since completing my BSc I have changed employers twice and have broadened my knowledge from environmental management into wider sustainability and diversifying into other sectors. Being a practitioner with IEMA has been key in achieving this. I have also gone on to complete my ISO 14001 lead auditor course and more recently a diploma in sustainable business practice (DipSBP), both of which are IEMA certified. One of the most valuable elements of IEMA is being able to engage with peers to learn and share experiences and practices. I feel that I am now at the stage where I can transition from IEMA practitioner to full member which will help in recognising my achievements within sustainability and help with my career progression.

Matthew Gibb, Group Sustainability Manager - MJ Gleeson PLC

I have recently undergone a career change after almost a decade working in another industry, and IEMA membership has been instrumental in demonstrating to employers (and peers) that I am committed to continuing professional development. Practitioner membership allows me to quantify the experiences I had in my career journey to date, and sets a path for my future

IEMA is the best choice to understand the actual meaning of current situation of climatic changes around the globe. IEMA really helps people to manage their personal life towards the global warming awareness and biodiversity, carbon emission and impact and aspects of environment. I strongly recommending everyone they should keep in touch with IEMA for their ease of life. Great Thanks and regards

Muzzam Ullah, Environment & Sustainability Officer

I am elated to share my experience with IEMA.I recently completed the Practitioner Membership Application process (online exam and written submission) and I was impressed with the thoroughness and professionalism of the assessment. The team at IEMA were prompt in addressing queries and providing valuable guidance. Since obtaining the certification, I have noticed a significant boost in my career prospects. I am grateful to IEMA for their commitment to excellence.

Omonor Gladys, Energy and Environment Advisor

Part of creating compliance and developing partnerships with clients, is confidence that their advisor has the understanding, skills and experience in Environmental Management and future Sustainability, especially at a time when conflicting social/commercial stakeholders purposely blur the impending climate change catastrophe. IEMA support the understanding and skills required, with recognition of demonstrated experience, and best-practice. Increasingly forward thinking Organisations are now expecting their advisors to demonstrate achievement of IEMA's Standards.

Peter Hutchison, HSEQ/Security Advisor

Before I joined IEMA back in 2020, I was struggling to get my foot in the door with a job that I loved and a career in sustainability, without any of the traditional analytical skills that were required for entry level roles. I was pointed in the direction of IEA by a fellow health and safety colleague who mentioned that my auditing experience might be relevant to an environmental auditor course. After searching through the websites resources and webinars targeted to those who are thinking about sighing up to different levels of membership, I decided to study for the Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management in my spare time. It gave me a basic understanding of planetary cycles and carbon while at the same time allowing me to relate my current auditing skills into practice during the ISO 14001 modules. After passing my exam and becoming an Associate member, I did not only feel more confident in my sustainability skills and ability to go for a career in such, I was finally getting positive responses to my dream job applications. The process made so much sense for me and I wish someone had introduced me to the opportunity during my university years. 3 years on and I am now a Practitioner member in a job that I love, using IEA resources to stay ahead of company changes. I have recently applied to be on the new Natural Capital and Biodiversity Steering group, in the hopes of contributing to this great platform.

Poppy Cunningham, Sustainability Advisor

Since studying the IEMA Certificate of Environmental Management I have vastly improved my understanding and knowledge of environment and sustainability in the UK and worldwide. This course is the only place I know of that pulls all of the information together to enable me to demonstrate my competence in the field. I am really enjoying learning so much and across many different disciplines from science & policy to law and social governance.

Richard Green, Project Officer

IEMA enhance knowledge regarding environment and explain the techniques how to implement these in practical life.

Sajjad Latif, Environmental Engineer

I started my journey with IEMA back in 2018 as an Associate Member. I was looking for a place that I could learn more about the environment having just taken on some additional responsibilities at work in my then role as Health and Safety Coordinator. Gradually over the course of the last 5 years I have undertaken several courses from the Foundation in Environmental Management, to just completing my Diploma in Sustainable Business Practise. During that time I've also successfully moved into a Sustainability and ESG Management position within a prominent company with a global footprint, and I also sit on the IEMA Climate Change and Energy Steering Committee. I have no doubt that IEMA has been instrumental in the success of my career, and I will continue to develop my membership as my career progresses with Full Membership as my next milestone.

Sara Halliday, Sustainability and ESG Manager

What do others say about Full membership?

Testimonial Background

After finishing my BSc (Hons) degree in Environmental Science, I wrote to every environmental consultancy in my local area, expressing my interest in working for them and sharing my CV. I just wanted to get my foot in the door and get some real-life practical experience. On the day of my graduation I found out I has been offered a graduate environmental consultant position, at a small local environmental consultancy called Galapagos in the West Midlands. I was delighted and set out on my journey into the world of environmental management and sustainability. It wasn’t easy and some of the tasks could be a bit monotonous, filing, printing, mailing, making tea, and my least favourite making cold sales calls. However, it was this role, which first connected me with IEMA. Galapagos delivered IEMA environmental training courses. I was asked to help update the training materials and add some new practical exercises. I then asked if I could attend these courses myself and get my own qualifications. I joined IEMA and became a registered environmental auditor. Now some 25 years later, I am the Global Environmental Lead for WSP, one the largest engineering and professional service firms, with over 68,000 employees in 300 offices worldwide. Throughout my journey IEMA has been ever present in my career. From supporting my continual profession development, expanding my knowledge through training and awareness, to building my network through conferences and events or participating in roundtables. A couple of my highlights include achieving my full membership and Chartered Environmentalist level in 2011. Alongside having articles published in the IEMA magazines and contributing to IEMA publications. This relationship will continue as I am now working towards IEMA Fellowship level, whilst also mentoring junior colleagues in their pursuit of IEMA membership progression.

Kirsten McLaughlin, Global Environmental Management Lead

Way, way back in 1999 I joined the Institute of Environmental Management (IEM) and the Environmental Auditors Registration Association (EARA), just before they merged to form IEMA. Over the past two and a bit decades (yes, I really am that old) I have been a proud and active member of our professional body. IEMA is a fantastic source of information and a true melting-pot for professional collaboration and influence over both industry and government. In all my time as a member I have always felt supported by IEMA and some-what emboldened by the validation that membership has given me. I remember becoming a Chartered Environmentalist in 2006 and my boss at the time (a Chartered Chemical Engineer) told me that I couldn't become "Chartered" because I wasn't an Engineer. This 'underestimation' of the importance of environmental management and sustainability as a profession has always stuck with me as another myth worth busting!

Frances Stones FIEMA, IMS Lead Auditor

IEMA membership has positively contributed to my success within the environmental sector, it's a centralized knowledge base platform that allows professionals to explore many different topics relating to environmental management and sustainability which will build a strong and resilient green work force.

Alicia Dauth, Senior Associate Environmental Consultant

IEMA is a source you can trust, whether it is an update in legislation, representing the sector at key events, providing insight to key initiatives and strategy, and supporting you in achieving a professional memberships. They are there throughout your career in the environment and sustainability sectors. The IEMA team are approachable and always on hand to offer help and advice. The events are informative, engaging and on a wide range of topics. I'm pleased to be a Chartered Environmentalist through IEMA.

Lorna Hurst, Associate Technical Director

To join the IEMA professional membership enhance my knowledge skill and every day something new to learn shared by IEMA. My journey started from Practitioner member in 20222 which encourage me throughout the year to excel further and get the advance level of membership to connect further and learn and connect with global environmental professionals. Upon my chartered membership result announcement confirmation it was like a achieving a targeted milestone.

Muhammad Haque, Senior Environmental Engineer

Learning new skills and knowledge in the area of climate change and environmental protection via dedicated training and participation in real-life projects was always among my priorities. I have joined IEMA to enhance my professional development and highlight my expertize. IEMA allows me keeping up to date with the developments of standards, regulations and best practices in environmental assessment and environmental governance, as well as participating in webinars and discussions with sustainability industry leaders and top experts in various fields. I also believe that IEMA membership is a valuable professional recognition, which opens new horizons for participation in international projects and initiatives.

Mykola Shlapak, Sustainability consultant

Since joining IEMA in 2002, I've benefited being a member in numerous ways. These include but not limited to: Participating in numerous courses and training provided by IEMA or IEMA Accredited Training Providers. Gaining support and encouragement from IEMA for setting up various events for the North Wales Branch which encourages new and enthusiastic members. Really important to keep up to date with environmental news and legislation and this is done via IEMA's Transform magazine, their regular Webinars, their website and their annual "Connect Week". Connecting with Leadership Team - the North Wales Group have reached out on numerous occasions to the IEMA Leadership Team and have always found them to be approachable and have time to talk. Overall, I'm extremely proud to be part of the IEMA Family. An Organisation's reputation is built on the conduct of its members. Members also need a well-managed, coordinated organisation to earn their respect and for them to be proud of. IEMA fulfills this.

Steve Roberts, Committee Member

As part of my profession, I advise site teams, subcontractors, project managers, contract managers, directors and engineers on the environmental impacts and risks on engineering and construction schemes. My Chartertership and Full Membership of IEMA has given me the credibility to advise on such important issues at both the design and construction stages of engineering and construction schemes. Also, my IEMA membership (CEnv and MIEMA) have helped me become a mentor to environmental graduates and sustainability practitioners and since becoming Chartered I have helped 11 environmental professionals successfully achieve their environmental Chartership.

Tara Yates, Environmental Manager

IEMA has helped me in my professional development via workshops and webinars which have counted as CPD both with IEMA and in the workplace. Moving from associate membership to full membership was a catalyst to having more responsibility and autonomy within my role. This gave me the confidence to go for voluntary redundancy and take a change of career path from private to public sector.

Kathryn Archer, Sustainable Procurement Specialist

I decided to apply for IEMA Full Membership and CEnv more than 20 years into my career as an environmental and sustainability consultant, having previously been chartered through another organisation which had become less relevant to my professional focus. I gained great personal and professional value from the application process, as it gave me the opportunity to really reflect on my achievements to date, consider whether I was still developing professionally and where I wanted to focus my future development, how to 'remain relevant' and how best to continue to deliver value to my profession. Since then, the publications and learning resources available through IEMA have helped to keep me moving forward professionally and allowed me to maintain the knowledge I require to successfully deliver my role against a dynamic backdrop. I really enjoy supporting early career colleagues with progressing their IEMA membership level and their wider career development and I am an advocate for the structure and opportunities that IEMA can provide.

Deryl Roberts, Director of Environmental Assessment

Being a full member of the IEAMA.I am frequently getting updates by receiving various news, and updates related to environmental, and sustainability issues. It's a nice platform where environmentalist can share their views and get worldwide environmental news.

Muhammad Zahid, Sr. Environmental Engineer Consultant role

For me the power of IEMA is the community of members. I am passionate about Net Zero and I see sustainable development being at the heart of this journey. A key part of this transition is having the ability to speak with and hear how other practitioners are approaching the challenge where I can cherry pick their approach to the work that I do. Coupled with the people, the resources are excellent and can give a direction to a new piece of legislation or guidance to enable sustainable development.

William Black, European Director of Consultancy

I joined IEMA early on in my career when my job focused on Environmental compliance. I took courses to progress my membership level and learnt a great deal (both skills and knowledge) on these courses which helped me to take my next steps in my career. I moved on to Environmental Management and later more into Sustainability which remains my current focus.

Jessica Barlow , Sustainability Manager

Being a member of IEMA has provided me with a development pathway to follow, through the various grades and informed by the skills map, along with professional recognition, and access to a whole network of other passionate and committed environmental management and sustainability professionals. I have benefited many times over the years from CPD and training, access to events, resources and the opportunity to input into consultations and reports that shape the industry. But perhaps most important has been the sense of belonging to a community who are all working to transform the world to sustainability.

Amanda Williams, Head of Environmental Sustainability

I joined IEMA over 20 years ago and it’s provided the perfect stepping stones throughout my career at all the right stages. It started with a distance-learning Associate IEMA course from Bath Uni. I have given back when I could, by acting as a regional Chair in Wales. I’ve written two articles for the IEMA magazine and my membership now keeps me in touch with environmental compliance and auditing matters as a SHEQ Director. Thanks IEMA.

Richard Gotheridge, SHEQ Director

I have working in the Environmental / sustainability field for over 20 years progressing from data gathering and on site compliance to work winning, proving technical solutions and strategy setting in the construction and rail industry I now am implementing sustainable principles across all areas of a family run business withing the food industry. Throughout my career progression IEMA has stood out as the professional body that has helped me develop essential skills ( through numerous training packages) and provided me with a benchmark on how a sustainability professional should position themselves within the business world. Being a member of IEMA has also help provide a level of confidence to continue doing the right thing against the tsunami of short term financial pressures that can have a detrimental impact on environmental and sustainable best practise.

What do others say about Fellow membership?

Testimonial Background

I have been a member of IEMA for around 20 years. The support from the peers is tremendous, the ideas and knowledge that members are prepared to share is wonderful. Working in Environmental management and Sustainability can sometime feel that you are fighting a loosing battle in relation to the amount of work that needs to be done. But I find attending training events and networking is inspirational and I come away with a sense of it all being possible. The knowledge shared via the teams of volunteers who work along side IEMA staff mean that this is an organisation that can make a different, not just to developing your career but positively impacting on the direction of travel in relation to sustainable development.

Rosemary Horry, Senior Lecturer

Becoming a member of IEMA early in my career was vital to how I could focus my efforts and develop personally and professionally in the opportunities I have had in transforming positive sustainable change in large organisations over the last 25 years. IEMA membership has provided me with worldwide knowledge and a robust professional development pathway to recognised as a credible and respected sustainability professional.

Arlette Anderson FIEMA, Non-Executive Director

IEMA was instrumental in my sustainability career journey right from the day I completed my Masters of Architecture (Sustainability). I started off as an Affiliate member to work out the path and in 10 years, I became a Fellow. IEMA's resources and networking events are useful for us to share our experience and knowledge at the same time learn from others to implement in our roles/projects. I find IEMA's Transform magazine and other specialists groups helps us to keep up-to-date with the changes that are happening in the UK and elsewhere. I strongly recommend graduates and others levels in sustainability career to become a member of IEMA to be recognised in the sustainability sector. We, as a sustainability professional got more responsibility to bring a sustainable change in this world to combat against climate change and social justice.

Gayathiri Gowri Shankar, Senior Sustainable Consultant

IEMA membership has been a fundamental element of my career, from my university studies through to my current role as a Technical Director of SLR Consulting Ltd, spanning over 30 years. Through my membership I've kept up to date with the rapidly developing sustainability and legal compliance arena and enabled me to feel confident in advising my clients on a wide range of topics. Progression through the membership levels has been rewarding and enabled me to clearly demonstrate my competence to others both internally and externally. I would therefore wholeheartedly recommend IEMA membership to anyone starting their career in environmental sustainability.

Emma Goodchild, Technical Director

I strongly endorse the leadership demonstrated by IEMA in its efforts to promote sustainability. Being able to call on the IEMA resources, expertise and credibility makes my role in supporting my clients much easier.

Gerard Higgins, CEO

Membership of IEMA has been incredibly beneficial to me in my career. When I became a sustainability professional, I had none of the conventional qualifications associated with the role. Joining IEMA - and climbing through the ranks - demonstrated my knowledge and commitment without having to go through lengthy and expensive re-training.

Richard Smith, Head of Environmental Sustainability, University of Manchester

I joined our Institution when it was the Institute of Environmental Management (IEMA) in the early 1990s, and transferred into IEMA in 1999 when it was formed. In 2005, I was appointed the 44th Fellow. My membership has always been an important part of my professional career, and I am proud to have FIEMA on my business card, website, and under my signature. The head office staff - particularly all three Chief Executives (prior CEs Russell Foster, and Tim Balcon; and the present one, Sarah Makherjee) - have been particularly helpful to me by supporting my books with professional endorsements. In return, I am proud to offer IEMA CPD opportunities through associated "Microlearning" content and assessments within the later editions. I expect to remain a member of IEMA for all of my life. Yes - it is THAT important to me.

Stephen Asbury, Author (of seven books for Taylor & Francis)

What do others say about Affiliate membership?

I joined IEMA shortly after being handed environmental management responsibilities for our organisation and being tasked with delivering an Environmental Management System appropriate for our business and to meet the ISO 14001 standard. IEMA membership has given me the skills and confidence to progress not only my professional and personal development and but was instrumental in helping provide to establish our EMS which is now fully operational and ISO 14001 certified. The IEMA training I have undertaken since becoming a member has also introduced me to wider environmental and social issues, which has encouraged me to not only advance my IEMA membership level but inspired me to enrol on an Environmental Studies degree – something I would never have considered just a couple of years ago! If you’re considering joining IEMA, my advice would be to go for it. It will not only open up opportunities, but it will also open your eyes.

Gary Price, EHS Manager

IEMA helped me connect with experts and professionals all across the UK, and let me engage in interesting discussions and seminars!

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the invaluable resources and opportunities that being a student member of IEMA has provided me. As a student with circa three years of experience in the sustainability and ESG industry, I have found immense value in the publications made accessible through my IEMA membership. Moreover, IEMA's platform has been instrumental in connecting me with a diverse and supportive professional network.
